November 24 marks the opening of the 2026 Yi Peng Festival in northern Thailand, particularly Chiang Mai, where thousands of illuminated lanterns create an ethereal nocturnal spectacle. The Buddhist tradition carries profound spiritual symbolism, as devotees use light to express reverence, make merit, and symbolically release misfortune. As a cherished Cultural celebration and one of the region’s most distinctive Cultural Holidays, Yi Peng blends spirituality with vibrant Festivities, including temple ceremonies, traditional performances, lantern displays, and communal gatherings. The sky becomes a luminous tapestry. This venerable Lanna tradition beautifully intertwines faith, artistry, heritage, and community spirit.
